Major events of 2011 

 13 January – Azerbaijan and the European Union signed a joint declaration on the Southern Gas Corridor.
 
 
22 January - President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was named “Person of the Year” in Romania.
 
 
17 February – A ceremonial event marking the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s restoring its independence and the presentation of the book called “Azerbaijan” was held in Paris.
 
 
27 February - The cableway and ski slope № 2 of the Shahdag Winter and Summer Tourism Complex was inaugurated.
 
 
3 March – The “AZAD Systems Co” production branch of the Defense Industry Ministry`s “Sherg” production unit, Baku instrument-making plant of the “Cihaz” Production Unit and “Senayecihaz” Scientific and Production Center were put into operation.
 
 
14 March – A solemn opening ceremony of the II Mugham International Festival titled “The world of Mugham” was held in Baku.
 
 
17 March – A foundation stone for a new terminal building at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport was laid.
 
 
2 April - Azerbaijan women`s volleyball club Azerrail claimed the Challenge Cup`s title.
 
 
7 April - The World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue took place in Baku.
 
 
9 April– The 1st congress of the Global Youth Movement for Alliance of Civilizations (GYMAOC) was held in Baku.
 
 
18 April – Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev was honored with the “Faithful Service” National Order of Romania in Grand Cross rank.
 
 
18 April – The Days of Culture of Azerbaijan were held in Paris with the participation of President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva.
 
 
29 April – The 10th Azerbaijan International Tourism and Travel Exhibition and the 2nd Republican Domestic Tourism Exhibition opened in Baku.
 
 
14 May - Azerbaijan emerged triumphant at the Eurovision-2011 song contest held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
 
 
17 May - A ceremonial event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s restoring its independence took place in Moscow.
 
 
19 May – An organizing committee for the Eurovision-2012 song contest in Baku was set up.
 
 
1 June – Azerbaijan`s first lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended an opening ceremony of the Azerbaijani pavilion in the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in Italy.
 
 
6 June – A foundation stone for the Baku Olympic Stadium was laid with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev.
 
 
8 June – The 18th International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference Incorporating Refining and Petrochemicals kicked off in Baku.
 
 
10 June – A memorial museum of Hero of the Soviet Union Mehdi Huseynzade opened in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. President Ilham Aliyev visited the memorial of Mehdi Huseynzade and viewed the museum.
 
 
16 June – The 10th, anniversary International Transport, Transit and Logistics Exhibition took place in Baku.
 
 
23 June – President Ilham Aliyev was presented with the “PRIX DE LA FONDATION” award of the Crans Montana Forum in Brussels and Azerbaijan`s first lady Mehriban Aliyeva was awarded the Forum`s Gold Medal.
 
 
29 June – The Darnagul station of the Baku Metro was commissioned.
 
 
5 July – The 3rd Congress of World Azerbaijanis was held in Baku.
 
 
7 July – President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to endorse a state program on Azerbaijani youth in 2011-2015
 
 
20 July – President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to approve a plan of measures on proclamation of 2011 as “Year of Tourism” in Azerbaijan.
 
 
30 July – An official opening of the 3rd International Music Festival and gala concert took place in Gabala.
 
 
6 September - A bust of Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva “Divine Muse, protectress of Azerbaijani Mugham” was presented in Canada
 
 
7 September – The Museum of Antiquarian Things in Gala archaeological-ethnographic museum complex opened in Baku.
 
 
8 September – President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was named the "Honorable Citizen of Astrakhan" by the Municipal Duma of the City of Astrakhan.
 
 
9 September - A new huge gas deposit in the Absheron block of the Caspian was discovered.
 
 
12 September – The 61st session of the World Health Organization`s Regional Committee for Europe was conducted in Baku.
 
 
15 September – A monument to People`s Artist of Azerbaijan and the USSR Muslim Magomayev was inaugurated in the center of Moscow. 
 
 
15 September – Azerbaijan`s first lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the 7th International Congress of Victims of Terrorism and an exhibition and concert dedicated to Azerbaijan in Paris.
 
 
23 September - An international event marking the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence was held in Baku.
 
 
25 September – A solemn opening of the Boxing World Championships took place in Baku.
 
 
29 September – A solemn ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence was held in Berlin. 
 
 
7 October - Azerbaijan`s first lady Mehriban Aliyeva was awarded France`s Order of the Legion of Honor in the rank of Officer. 
 
 
10 October – The first International Humanitarian Forum on the "21 century: hopes and challenges" was held in Baku. 
 
 
15 October – The World Youth Festival took place in Ganja bringing together nearly 100 youth from 50 countries. 
 
 
17 October – A bust to architect and founder of modern, independent Azerbaijan, national leader Heydar Aliyev was unveiled in USA. 
 
 
21 October - The first summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States took place in Almaty. 
 
 
21 October – The Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme signed a Memorandum on Understanding “On mobilizing Azerbaijani Youth in preparation for action for the RIO+20 Summit to be held in 2012” in Baku. 
 
 
25 October - The Republic of Azerbaijan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council with the support of 155 countries.
 
 
25 October – The AYPE-T plant was inaugurated and foundation stones for the Heydar Aliyev Vocational Education Lyceum and Star oil refinery of the Petkim Company were laid in Izmir.
A first meeting of the Turkey-Azerbaijan High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council took place and a protocol of the meeting was signed.
 
 
 
25 October – First lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva participated in the 36th meeting of UNESCO`s General Conference in Paris. Azerbaijan was elected as vice-president of the UNESCO General Conference.
 
 
1 November - Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva was presented with the “Key to Life” award for her active participation in humanitarian projects for children in the annual charity meeting of U.S. “The Children`s Cancer and Blood Foundation” in New York.
 
 
14 November – President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was honored with Bulgaria`s highest state award “Stara Planina”. 
 
 
22 November - The constituent congress of the Islamic Countries Youth Entrepreneurs Network, ICYEN was held in Baku.
 
 
23 November - The 17th International telecommunications and information technologies exhibition and conference “BakuTel-2011” opened in Baku. 
 
 
25 November – The 3rd All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress was held in Moscow.
 
 
29 November – 2 December – Celebrative events to mark the 20th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence took place in Vatican and Rome. 
 
 
19 December – President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to establish Youth Foundation under the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan.  
 
 
20 December - Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev was honored with “Worthy friend of Balkans” award.
 
 
21 December – A conference entitled “Modernize policy: new economic and social challenges” was held in Baku bringing together 61 delegates from 32 countries. 
 
 
24 December – A foundation stone for the Baku White City was laid.  
 
 
 
24 December – President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was honored with “Friendship of the Peoples” award.
 
 
26 December – President Ilham Aliyev signed an Order on pardoning of a number of prisoners on the eve of the 31 December - Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis and New Year.
 
 
 
29 December – The Intellectual Transport Management Center opened in Baku.
